Introduction

He never knew her name — but his song found her in the flood — Jelly Roll stands weeping at little Janie Hunt’s funeral, singing “Save Me” as her grandma’s final words shatter his heart

Before the rain swallowed Camp Mystic, 9-year-old Janie Hunt spent every sunset humming Jelly Roll’s voice into the Texas dusk. She was the camper who wiped away other kids’ tears when the thunder started, the girl who scribbled hearts on every letter home. Her grandma, Margaret Hunt, says Janie’s favorite thing was the tiny beaded necklace that spelled her name — the same necklace that led rescuers to her after the floods ripped through the campgrounds and silenced 27 lives.

When word reached Jelly Roll about the child who found courage in his songs, the man whose gravel voice speaks to the broken drove through the night and slipped into the church where Janie lay in a white dress her mama picked out. He stood before her tiny casket and whispered: “This is for you, baby girl.” And as his raw voice poured out “Save Me” over rows of tear-soaked mourners, Janie’s grandma rose and took his hand.

With the last note still hanging in the air, Margaret leaned close and said the words that cracked him open: “She believed your song could keep her safe. Now you’ve brought her home.”

Witnesses say Jelly Roll wept so hard he couldn’t stand. Neighbors swear they heard Janie’s favorite melody echo through the chapel walls — as if, for one last time, the little girl who loved everybody was singing it right back.
